Sir Archibald David Stirling is a Scottish officer in the British army. David Stirling was born on November 15, 1915, in Bridge of Allan, Scotland and passed away on November 4, 1990, in Westminster, London, England. David Stirling was also the founder and instigator of the Special Air Service (SAS). During the Second World War, Stirling participated in combat.
David Stirling attended Catholic boarding school Ampleforth College. On July 24, 1937, Stirling graduated from the Ampleforth College Contingent Officer Training Corps and was commissioned into the Scots Guards. David Stirling signed up to join Force Z’s newly formed No. 8 (Guards) Commando in June 1940, which was led by Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Laycock (later named “Layforce”). In support of the seizure of Rhodes, Layforce set sail for the Middle East on February 1st, 1941, but they quickly disbanded due to heavy losses in the Battle of Crete and the Battle of the Litani River.
